English Translation
Om, That (Brahman) is infinite, this (universe) is infinite.
From that infinite, this infinite comes.
From that infinite, this infinite goes, yet infinite remains.
Om peace, peace, peace.
Om, all this, whatever moves on the earth, is enveloped by the Lord.
Therefore, you should enjoy what is given by Him, by renunciation.
Do not covet anyone's wealth. || 1 ||
One should wish to live in this world by performing actions,
For there is nothing other than action; never does action bind a man. || 2 ||
Those worlds of Asuras are covered by blinding darkness, they are enveloped.
Those who destroy the Self go to them after death. || 3 ||
The One who never moves, who is swifter than the mind,
The gods could not overtake Him, though He runs before them.
He stands, and yet He runs beyond; He is far, yet He is near. || 4 ||
That moves not, yet is moved; that is far, yet is near;
That is within all, and yet is beyond all. || 5 ||
He who sees all beings in the Self alone, and the Self in all beings,
Does not hate anyone thereafter. || 6 ||
For when one sees all beings in the Self alone,
Then where is delusion, where is sorrow, for one who sees oneness? || 7 ||
That (Self) is everywhere, bright, bodiless, without veins, pure, untouched by evil,
The wise seer, the self-existent, who has allotted objects appropriately,
Who is the source of all desires, through numerous seasons. || 8 ||
Into blinding darkness enter those who follow the non-manifestation (avidya);
Into even greater darkness, as it were, enter those who are devoted to the manifestation (vidya). || 9 ||
One result they say is obtained from the non-manifestation, another from the manifestation;
Thus we have heard from the wise who taught us this. || 10 ||
He who knows both the non-manifestation and the manifestation together,
Overcoming death through the non-manifestation, attains immortality through the manifestation. || 11 ||
Into blinding darkness enter those who follow the non-becoming (asambhuti);
Into even greater darkness, as it were, enter those who are devoted to the becoming (sambhuti). || 12 ||
One result they say is obtained from the non-becoming, another from the becoming;
Thus we have heard from the wise who taught us this. || 13 ||
He who knows both the becoming and the perishing together,
Overcoming death through the perishing, attains immortality through the becoming. || 14 ||
The face of Truth is covered with a golden disc;
O Sun, uncover it that I, who am devoted to Truth, may see it. || 15 ||
O Pushan, O nourisher, O solitary seer, Yama, Surya, son of Prajapati,
Spread your rays, gather your brilliance, I see your most radiant form,
The Person who is there, I am He. || 16 ||
Let the vital breath depart to the wind, let this body end in ashes,
Om, remember the deed, remember the deed, remember the deed, O mind. || 17 ||
O Fire, lead us by the good path, O God, you who know all ways,
Remove from us the deceiving sin, we offer you many prayers. || 18 ||
Om, That (Brahman) is infinite, this (universe) is infinite.
From that infinite, this infinite comes.
From that infinite, this infinite goes, yet infinite remains.
Om peace, peace, peace.
