English Translation
Shri Suta said:
Having thus settled his mind and focused his heart within,
He chanted the supreme mantra that was to be chanted, learned in a previous life. || 1 ||
Shri Gajendra said:
Salutations to that Bhagavan, by whom this conscious universe exists,
To the Primordial Person, the original seed, to the Supreme Lord we bow. || 2 ||
In whom all this is contained, from where this has come, by whom this is, whatever exists,
Who is beyond all, beyond the distant, to that Self-existent Lord I surrender. || 3 ||
He who, by His own power, has placed this conscious universe within Himself,
Manifesting somewhere and hidden elsewhere, seeing both the seen and unseen with His eyes,
May He, the primal source of the soul, protect me from beyond, the Transcendent Lord. || 4 ||
By time, all five elements, in all worlds, in all their protectors, and in all causes,
Existed deep darkness, in which the Lord shone forth on the far shore. || 5 ||
Whom the gods and sages do not know the path of,
Who would dare to desire to go there?
As the puppet's movements are caused by the creator, not by itself,
So may that difficult-to-cross one protect me. || 6 ||
Whose auspicious path is longed for by the desireless,
Sages, freed from attachment, easy to please,
Walking in the forest, following the vow of the worlds without injury,
Self-realized souls, benevolent friends, may He be my refuge. || 7 ||
For whom there is no birth nor karma,
No name, form, or qualities or defects,
Yet, for the sake of the world's manifestation, He assumes forms at the proper time,
Through His own maya. || 8 ||
Salutations to the Supreme Lord, to Brahman with infinite power,
Salutations to Him who is formless, who has all forms, whose deeds are wondrous. || 9 ||
Salutations to the self-revealing lamp, the witness, the Supreme Self,
Salutations to Him who is far beyond speech, and beyond the minds and hearts of all. || 10 ||
Attained through purity, free from action, the wise one,
Salutations to the Lord of liberation, the abode of liberation bliss. || 11 ||
Salutations to Him who is peaceful, terrible, hidden, the support of qualities and dharma,
Salutations to Him who is without distinction, gentle, and the embodiment of knowledge. || 12 ||
Salutations to You, O Knower of the field, O all-ruler, O witness,
Salutations to the Person, the source of the self, to Prakriti, the primal source. || 13 ||
The seer of all sense-qualities, the cause of all perceptions,
Salutations to You who have the shadow of the non-existent and are always manifest. || 14 ||
Salutations, salutations to the cause of all,
To the causeless, the wondrous cause,
Salutations to the great ocean of all scriptures,
Salutations to liberation, to the supreme refuge. || 15 ||
To Him who is the abode of qualities, devoid of impurity and fault,
By whose power the mind becomes agitated,
By the conviction of non-action having turned away from the Vedic path,
Salutations to Him who is self-effulgent. || 16 ||
To Him who releases the animal from the trap of the beast of the body,
Liberated, merciful, salutations to the shelter,
Who, by a portion of Himself, pervading all beings, is pleased in the heart,
Salutations to Bhagavan, the great one seen face to face. || 17 ||
For whom, seeking dharma, desire, wealth, and liberation,
Worshippers attain their desired goal,
What wish of mine should He not fulfill, even the imperishable body?
May the compassionate ones grant me liberation. || 19 ||
Who for the ascetic devotees desires no other gain,
They sing that wondrous, auspicious character,
Immersed in the ocean of bliss. || 20 ||
That imperishable Brahman, Supreme Lord,
Unmanifest, attained through the yoga of meditation on the Self,
Beyond the senses, subtle like the distant,
Immeasurable, the primal, complete, and infinite. || 21 ||
From whom Brahma and other gods, the Vedas, the worlds, moving and unmoving,
Have arisen, divided by names and forms, by the force of Time and Fate. || 22 ||
As the flames of fire, of the sun, of electricity, go forth,
Returning without effort to their own brilliances,
So from Him this stream of qualities has gone forth—
Intelligence, mind, the elements, the body, and the senses. || 23 ||
He is not a god, demon, human, or animal,
Not female, not male, not neuter,
Not this quality, not this action, not this—
He remains, conquering all that remains. || 24 ||
I do not wish to live here, even for a moment,
Inside or outside, surrounded by other terrors,
I desire liberation from that whose time of transformation is not,
From the covering of the Self—may it be destroyed. || 25 ||
I am the creator of the universe, the universe, the non-universe, the Lord of all,
The universal Self, the unborn Brahman, bowing I take refuge in the Supreme Abode. || 26 ||
With the bonds of action severed, established in yoga within the heart,
Whom the yogis see as the Lord of Yogis, to Him I bow. || 27 ||
Salutations, salutations to You with unsurpassed speed,
To the three-fold power, Lord of all qualities,
Protector of the surrendered, with unfathomable power,
Unattainable even by all the senses. || 28 ||
The Vedas do not know the Self; with my intelligence I cannot obtain Him,
That difficult to attain, incomparable Bhagavan, I am indeed His. || 29 ||
Shri Shuka said:
Thus Gajendra, having narrated without distinction,
Brahma and others, proud of their various forms,
Did not approach; for realizing the all-pervading Self,
There Hari, the enemy of the crocodile, swiftly appeared. || 30 ||
Having heard that plea of the king of elephants, the Lord of all,
Hearing the hymn with the gods and those who praised,
Mounting Garuda, resplendent like a cloud, armed with the discus,
He quickly went where Gajendra was. || 31 ||
The Lord, seeing the elephant suffering in the middle of the lake,
Seeing Garuda mati (the bird) and Hari in the sky with the discus raised,
Gajendra, lifting his lotus-hand, cried out with difficulty:
"Narayana, salutations to You, O teacher of all." || 32 ||
Seeing him afflicted, the unborn One quickly descended,
And mercifully pulled the elephant from the crocodile's grasp,
Severing the crocodile's mouth with His discus, releasing Gajendra,
He removed the suffering of the elephant, his enemy. || 33 ||
